Home of the "real" Hippo Hands

Winter handlebar muffs are now available for the Vespa models listed above (ET2, ET4, etc) by ordering with the "add to cart button" below. For owners of other scooters with similar handlebar setup as the Vespas, these muffs will probably fit as well. Send us an email with a couple of pictures of your handlebar setup, together with a measurement of the circumference around the handlebars' cowling, in order for us to be able to tell you if they'll fit properly.

Hippo Hands are made of heavy duty Cordura nylon exterior, 18 oz. polyester polar fleece inside, and plastic stiffener in between. Velcroed hand opening, plenty of room to fit the large handlebar cowlings of Vespas and other scooters. On models without turn signals on the handlebars, there's a large soft nylon "skirt" that closes around the handlebar cowling tightly with a draw cord.

These Hippo Hands will fit Vespa models: ET2, ET4, GT200, GT250, GTS250, LX50/150, FLY150, MP3 400, MP3 500, BV500. They will also fit the Yamaha Majesty Scooter, and the Honda Reflex, Kymco S125, among others.

We have just designed a new Hippo Hands' model to fit Vespa scooters that have turn signal lights attached with a bracket to the handlebars (underneath). Please note that this model doesn't have the soft nylon skirt that closes around the handlebar.

Hi Dan. I got them Thursday, just before I left on a 1000 mile trip in the rain and cold. The Hippo Hands saved my hands. Temps were in the lower 40's, sometimes as low as 40, and it was raining continuously. My hands were fine. If I had heated grips, my hands would have been toasty. :-)

Dan - I've used them several times now, and My comfort level has probably increased by 50%. Years ago I sold the original ones. Yours are much improved. These are some of the most effective pieces of riding gear that I have used to date.

Hi Dan.  I got a pair of Hippo Hands from you in April (I think) for my Vespa GTV, and you asked if I would send you some photos.  The weather was too warm then to try them.  I've been using them recently, and exercised my new camera a bit.  Attached are some of the results.  Feel free to use them as you like.

They really do make use of summer gloves possible even in biting cold weather.  That way I can actually feel the controls.  I've gotten several comments from people in cages (motorcyclists driven inside, perhaps?) shouted on the open road or across three lanes of traffic at a stop light - "What are those?  Where did you get them?  Do they work?"

The handlebar sleeve is flexible enough that it fits around the GPS mount with no trouble, and seals well.  This is especially important with the GTV, which has no hand protection at all from the windscreen or the fairing.  I've tried them with the mirror stem in both positions through the slot (behind one gripper, and behind both grippers) and both seem to work fine - I haven't developed a preference for either position.

Keep up the great work!

-Nick

I recently put a set of your handlebar muffs on my GS. Oh, the shame of it all.. Now I ride around, with my summer gloves on, it's almost freezing, and I'm trying to decide if the grips are TOO WARM at low heat; should I just shut them off all together? Have a good Thanksgiving and keep up the good work. Thank you for the fine product.

Hi Dan,

It's not nearly as cold here in Seattle as where you are, but we had some days in the low 20s early in December and the Hippo Hands were great. They were comfortable with just my lightweight leather gloves on and I even rode around some barehanded in perfect comfort. I'd bought some heavier, insulated gloves, but they were incredibly clumsy to use when I wanted to manipulate keys or switches. With Hippo Hands I decided I didn't them need at all. I'm happy to tell anyone who asks that they are extremely well made in terms of design, material quality and manufacturing craftsmanship-a super value and an excellent solution for cold weather riding. I know you don't advertise them as waterproof, but even here in rainy Seattle they've not only helped me stay warm, but dry as well.
